ALL THINGS WORK TOGETHER FOR GOOD....

The verse that has been reverberating in my head all week is this one:

And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.
Romans 8:28

It's a well-known verse and one I memorized soon after I became a believer 46 years ago. We often quote this verse to one another, but do we really believe it? When things go wrong in our lives, when trouble strikes, it is sometimes hard to take this verse at face value. Is this really happening for my good? How can that be? Yet, that is what the Word of the Lord says.

In the days of the Second Intifada (2000 - 2008), when suicide bombings were an almost everyday occurrence, we rose in the morning not knowing if we would survive the day. Every night when I made it safely home again, I gave thanks for having got through another day alive.  I also remember that during that time there were many, many accounts of people being saved from injury or death because something went wrong, a puncture or a traffic jam for example. There were so many such stories it made quite an impact on my life. Now when things go wrong, I thank the Lord and am much less likely to get irritated and angry. I just think, perhaps this is from the Lord, perhaps he is protecting me from something much worse, or perhaps it is for the sake of someone else.

It may seem a bit arrogant or self-centered to claim that God works every circumstance so that it is for my good, but what an amazing God we have that he can do that for all his children, simultaneously everywhere.  But what of the times when He doesn't save us. There were believers who died in the Intifada after all. Bad things do happen to even the LORD's  most devoted followers - disease, accidents, and all kinds of loss. I don't have an answer for that except faith- faith that even the 'worst' is part of God's working things out for our good.  The LORD took from Job everything he loved, his family, his wealth and livelihood, and finally his health. God did not tell Job why, but simply confronted Job with His awesome majesty and power. Job eventually had to just bow down to God's Will in humility. In the end, that is all we can do. There are times when we are forced to choose between despair and faith.

A few days ago I experienced a relatively minor 'trouble' in which God demonstrated his working out of things for good. I had to go to the main post office in town, and at the central bus station I boarded the number 74 bus, that should have taken me to the post office in about 10 minutes.  It was quite some time afterwards that I came to the realization that I was on the right number bus but going in the wrong direction, and I ended up right across the wrong side of town. I wasn't best pleased with myself for this silly error,  but I got off, crossed the road and waited for a bus going the other way. In a few minutes one turned up and, as the driver pulled up to the stop, the front of the bus went up over the footpath right where a little toddler was standing. He would have been struck by the bus and injured had I not been there to pull him to safety.  On my way back across town it dawned on me that perhaps God had allowed me to make that albeit time-consuming and inconvenient mistake just so I would be in the right place at the right time to save that little boy!

Some days later my faith was once more put to the test. My neighbor's dog chased my cat up a tree. My cat has until recently only lived indoors and though he knows how to climb up trees, he has no idea how to climb down again. He was up there for two whole nights and one very hot day,  but he just went higher and higher, until he was in the very topmost branches of a cypress tree about the equivalent of 4-5 storeys high. I eventually found a professional animal rescuer who, after a 2 hour rescue effort and no little risk to his own life, managed to get both himself and the cat down safely. He said it was the most difficult rescue he had ever done and that it was a miracle that he had succeeded. I told him that I was not surprised as I had been standing below praying fervently the whole time.  I don't know for sure but I hope that will have at least sown a small seed in that man's life, and he will draw closer to God as a result.  It was something of a traumatic experience for me and it is not over as now I am very afraid it will happen again. Today I let the cat out once more but it is with a lot of anxiety. I guess the Lord is stretching my faith muscle through all this, once again.

In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials, that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ, whom having not seen you love.
1 Peter 1: 6-8

I thank God that living in Israel there are plenty of opportunities to grow in faith.  We live in constant physical danger, and have to deal with many emotional trials and spiritual attacks. We cannot let our guard down one instant. The Enemy is prowling around constantly looking for our weak spots.  This is especially true here in the Jerusalem area where the main focus of spiritual warfare lies. Please pray for the growth of faith, and for physical and spiritual protection, for all the Believers here, especially the spiritually immature. Many of the local Believers, especially those in leadership,  are going through fiery trials at the present time, struggling with serious illnesses or other very difficult situations.

I am pleased to say that in the 30 + years I have lived here in Israel there has been tremendous growth both in numbers and maturity in the Body of Yeshua here. There is still much to be done however. One of the weak areas is the lack of maturity in the local congregations. Many people do not see commitment to congregational life as being important and often hop from one congregation to another. Others are so involved with other ministries, or their work, that they have neither time nor energy to devote to the development of healthy congregational life.

Our congregation is trying to create a stronger expression of our faith, by means of the establishment of cell groups, in which we can get to know each other in greater depth, support and encourage one another, study the Word together, and create an unthreatening environment to bring in those who are open to the gospel or who are new believers.

It has been difficult to develop any cohesion amongst us because we are broadly scattered geographically, speak many different languages and have heavy commitments of time and energy outside of the congregation. It is hoped that geographically based groups can overcome these difficulties to some extent. We now have three cell groups operating, one in the city and two here in Mevasseret Zion, one for Portuguese speakers and one for English speakers. The latter was just started last week and will be meeting mainly in my home.

The congregation will also soon be starting a Bible Study Course for new believers or those who are interested, and I may be helping out with that too.  We are continuing our Friday afternoon combined meeting in Hebrew and now I am one of two who translate into English on a regular basis. We take turn about.  Recently our congregation has joined with the King of Kings group of cooperating congregations. This is also a step towards maturity and growth as we can share resources and giftings more efficiently, supporting and helping one another, whilst maintaining our independence and identity.

Another sign of growth in the body is the establishment of a Messianic TV station called 'Yeshua Hai' (Jesus Lives)  Their application to broadcast on cable television was turned down but it is broadcasting online. Here is the link: http://www.yeshuachai.tv.  It broadcasts only in Hebrew and presents gospel movies, testimonies from local believers and teachings. It is relying on word of mouth to spread knowledge of its existence so please pass this information on to those who might be interested.  Pray that this station will be greatly used to spread the good news.

We also have a newsletter that goes out to all who wish to receive it by email. There are both Hebrew and English versions. Here is the latest issue
https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/#inbox/15de19c7f6700214.  There are many articles of interest about Israel and about the Body of Messiah here in Israel. You can ask to have it sent to your inbox by writing to admin@kehilanews.com.

Another resource for information is the online magazine "Jerusalem Today". You can subscribe to it to receive online or paper issues. http://www.israeltoday.co.il/

There are many excellent ministries involving both foreign and local believers operating in the Land. One such is Ba'ad Hayim (Pro-Life), which reaches out to pregnant women and offers an alternative to abortion. To date, this organisation has saved the lives of some 2000 babies and provides practical and emotional support for their mothers. Last year Ba'ad Hayim received an award from the Israeli government for their "significant contribution to the protection of mothers and children."

There are also many other ministries which support various groups such as believers in the armed forces, or those recently released from the armed forces, single mothers, and young people, or which distribute food, clothing, furniture and practical help to needy Israeli residents of all ethnic and religious groups. Yet other ministries are active in intercession,  worship and prayer.

In this blog update I have concentrated on the needs of the Body of Yeshua here in the Land. It is good to pray about the security situation and other events that take place in Israel but it is ultimately more important to pray for the spread of the gospel so that the people of Israel today can find the true peace that passes all understanding, and eternal life. We also need strong local congregations to disciple and feed those who come to faith, or who are involved in the various ministries.  It is God's plan and desire to save the people of Israel, not just practically in returning them to the Land but also spiritually in returning them to the pure and true worship of their LORD God, the God of Israel, in Yeshua, the Messiah.

I say then, have they (Israel) stumbled that they should fall? Certainly not! But through their fall, to provoke them to jealousy, salvation has come to the Gentiles.  Now if their fall is riches for the world, and their failure riches for the Gentiles, how much more their fullness!

For I speak to you Gentiles; inasmuch as I am an apostle to the Gentiles, I magnify my ministry, if by any means I may provoke to jealousy those who are my flesh and save some of them.  For if their being cast away is the reconciling of the world, what will their acceptance be but life from the dead?...

For I do not desire, brethren, that you should be ignorant of this mystery, lest you should be wise in your own opinion, that blindness in part has happened to Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in. And so all Israel will be saved, as it is written:
“The Deliverer will come out of Zion,
And He will turn away ungodliness from Jacob;

For this is My covenant with them,
When I take away their sins.”

MIRACLE NATION

Even if there are moments when we think we've never had it this bad, even if the political situation is a source of doom and gloom for many, we should remind ourselves once a year that the reality we live in far exceeds all our dreams and expectations...
The State of Israel is a miracle.

Thus read the headlines in one of Israel's leading papers today, Israel's 67th Independence Day.

'Miracle' is a word overused these days but let us pause a moment and remember what 'miracle' really means. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines 'miracle' as an extraordinary event manifesting divine intervention in human affairs.

From the very beginning Israel was an extraordinary nation that resulted from the divine intervention of the LORD in human affairs. We sometimes refer to the people of Israel as the 'chosen people' as if God lined up all the nations and chose Israel out of them. But this is not so. God called up one man, a man of faith, Abram (later to be renamed Abraham), and from his seed created the nation for His purposes, in order to bless all the other nations (Genesis 12: 1-3). Not only that, at least three of the four mothers of the nation of Israel, Sarah, Rebekah and Rachel, were all barren, and God supernaturally opened their wombs in order to create the nation (Genesis 11:30;Genesis 25:21 and Genesis 29:31,30:22). Scripture does not record whether Leah was also barren but it does say that God opened her womb ( Genesis 29:31). Whatever the case, the people of God, 'Am Israel, was established, called and formed by the express intervention and initiative of the LORD. A miracle nation indeed!

Through Israel, the LORD brought forth all the prophets, the revelation through history of God's love for humankind, the prophets, the Holy Scriptures, and, greatest gift of all, the Messiah, Yeshua (Jesus), through whom the world would be redeemed and saved. Should we then be surprised that modern Israel is also a 'miracle nation'?

In the early years of the nineteenth century the entire population of the region now known as Israel and the "Palestinian territories" (the West Bank, or Judah and Samaria), probably had a population of only around half a million including Jews and Arabs (1). European travelers at this time described an almost empty land with a dwindling population of Jews, Arabs and a variety of others, all afflicted by poverty and disease. Mark Twain, in 1867, described it thus
"There is not a solitary village throughout its (the Jezreel Valley) whole extent - not for thirty miles in either direction. There are two or three small clusters of Bedouin tents, but not a single permanent habitation. One may ride ten miles hereabouts and not see ten human beings ... (in reference to the Galilee) these unpeopled deserts, these rusty mounds of barrenness, that never, never, never do shake the glare from their harsh outlines, and fade and faint into vague perspective; that melancholy ruin of Capernaum; this stupid village of Tiberias, slumbering under its six funereal palms... We reached Tabor safely ... We never saw a human being on the whole route. ...Nazareth is forlorn... Jericho the accursed lies in a moldering ruin ... Bethlehem and Bethany, in their poverty and their humiliation.... Bethsaida and Chorzin have vanished from the earth, and the "desert places" around them ... sleep in the hush of a solitude that is inhabited only by birds of prey and skulking foxes" (2)

On the Eve of this year's Independence Day the population of Israel stands at 8,345,000, 75% of which are Jewish, and 21% Arab. In 1948, at the establishment of the state, the population stood at only 806,000. http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-4649494,00.html  This represents a 1000 fold increase in just 67 years.

Since 1948, in spite of all the odds, Israel has flourished.  Here is a list of just some of the accomplishments of modern Israel as compiled by  Rabbi John Rosove two years ago:
  •     Israel is the only country in the Middle East that based its principles of government on both democratic liberal values and on the values of the Biblical prophets.
  •     Israel is the largest immigrant-absorbing nation on earth.
  •     Israel has the world's second highest per capita rate of published books.
  •     Israel is the only nation on earth that resurrected an ancient language, Hebrew, as its national language.
  •     Israeli poets and song writers are regarded as heroes.
  •     Israel is the only country in the world that entered the 21st century with a net gain in its number of trees.
  •     Israel has more museums per capita than any country.
  •     Israel developed the cell phone, Windows NT and XP operating systems, Pentium MMX Chip technology, the Pentium-4 microprocessor, the Centrino Processor, voice mail technology, and AOL Instant Messenger ICQ.
  •     Israel has the highest per capita rate of home computers in the world.
  •     Israel designed the airline industry's most impenetrable flight security system.
  •     Israel designed and implemented the Iron Dome Defense system.
  •     Israel has the highest ratio of university degrees in the world.
  •     Israel produces more scientific papers per capita than any other nation, and one of the highest per capita rates of patents filed.
  •     Israel has the third highest rate of entrepreneurship in the world.
  •     Israel is second in the world in the number of start-up companies behind only the U.S.
  •     Israel has the world’s largest per capita number of biotech start-ups.
  •     Israel has the third largest number of NASDAQ listed companies, behind the U.S. and Canada, and is ranked second for venture capital funds.
  •     Israel has the highest average living standard in the Middle East.
  •     24% of Israel’s workforce holds university degrees, ranking third in the industrialized world; 12% hold advanced degrees.
  •     Israel leads the world in the number of scientists and technicians in the workforce.
  •     Israel is a world leader in water renewal, recycling, desalination, and solar heating.
  •     Israel invented the drip irrigation system used around the world.
  •     An Israeli company is developing a toilet that needs no water and generates its own power to turn solid waste into sterile and odorless fertilizer in 30 seconds, thereby affecting 1.1 billion people who do not use a toilet.
  •     An Israeli scientist has developed a way to preserve 50% of every grain and pulse harvest lost to pests and mold in the developing world.
  •     Israel won international praise for the speed and expertise with which it responded to a 7.0-magnitude earthquake in Haiti that killed 300,000 by sending a team of 240  Israeli doctors, nurses, rescue and relief workers to set up an advanced field hospital to work in search-and-rescue missions.
  •     An Israeli company developed a water purification system that delivers safe drinking water from contaminated water, seawater and even urine thereby addressing the tragedy of 1.6 million children under the age of five who die annually from untreated drinking water in developing nations.
  •     Israeli scientists developed the first fully computerized, no-radiation, diagnostic instrumentation for breast cancer.
  •     Hadassah medical researchers found the gene that causes liver disease, thus paving the way for new treatments for alcoholism.
  •     Tel Aviv University Scientists say a nutritional supplement commonly sold in health food stores can delay the advance of degenerative brain disorders such as Parkinson’s disease.
  •     Israel's Given Imaging developed the first ingestible video camera, so small it fits inside a pill that can view the small intestine from the inside to detect for cancer and digestive disorders.
  •     Israeli researchers developed a device that helps the heart pump blood that is synchronized with a camera that helps doctors diagnose the heart’s mechanical operations through a system of sensors.
  •     An Israeli company developed a computerized system for ensuring proper administration of medications, thus removing human error from medical treatment.

If you are thinking about boycotting Israeli products or academics, think twice!!! You may be shooting yourself in the foot (you would have to throw away your cell phone and computer - just for a start!). Modern Israel is truly fulfilling her God-given calling to bless the world.

Yet, all this is nothing compared with what will be. For as the Apostle Paul said of his brethren, Israel:
I say then, have they stumbled that they should fall? Certainly not! But through their fall, to provoke them to jealousy, salvation has come to the Gentiles. 12 Now if their fall is riches for the world, and their failure riches for the Gentiles, how much more their fullness!

THE CAIN PRINCIPLE

After a couple of weeks of warm, spring-like weather, winter returned to Israel this week with a vengeance. On Wednesday the whole country was blanketed in a very dense cloud of dust, courtesy of the Sahara. Late in the afternoon it began to rain lightly here,  coating everything in a thick layer of sticky mud. Only the car wash people were rejoicing! That night and over the next couple of days heavy snow fell in the Golan and northern Galilee, but none here in Jerusalem. Along the coast heavy rain and hail brought flooding in some areas. Again here in Jerusalem, not a drop in spite of the bitter cold and heavy cloud cover. Last night there may have been a shower here. I hope so, as the trees badly needed their leaves washed before summer sets in.

In spite of this week's wintery spell there are many signs of spring around. I am sitting on my balcony and in the yard below I can see the birds sipping the nectar of the blossoms on our almond tree. Last weekend I joined thousands of Israelis on our annual 'pilgrimage' to the countryside to see the beautiful displays of wildflowers.

THE CAIN PRINCIPLE

In my last blog I spoke about how  Israel is more and more being accused of being the root of the problem in the Middle East, the cause of all the violence. This is a Lie being spread by the Enemy and one that needs to be countered and rejected, especially by those who believe the Word of God, as revealed in the Scriptures.

The State of Israel is not the 'problem'; the problem is man's rebellion against God and His plans for redemption. Indeed, far from being the 'problem', the people and nation of Israel is very much a core part of the solution. It is through the people and nation of Israel, and the Messiah born of that nation, that God is working the ultimate redemption of the whole world.

The hatred and violence of her neighbors against Israel goes far back in history, and we can see its roots in the account about Cain and his brother Abel (though one could argue it goes back even further, to the rebellion of Adam and Eve). In the story of Cain and Abel however we can see a fundamental principle revealed - the one I call the Cain Principle. Below is an excerpt from a book I am currently writing about this very subject.

After Adam and Eve were cast out of the Garden of Eden, Eve gave birth to two sons, Cain the elder and his brother Abel. Abel grew up and became a keeper of sheep and Cain was a farmer, a tiller of the ground. In due course, they brought offerings to the LORD. Cain brought an offering of the fruit of the ground and Abel brought of the first-born of his flock, and we are told that God respected the offering of Abel, but not that of Cain. Understandably perhaps, Cain felt rejected and angry, but God came to him saying, Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen? If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin lies at the door. And its desire is for you, but you should rule over it” (Genesis 4: 6-7).

In these words lies a fundamental principle, which underlies all God’s dealings with man and which underpins all of human history. Cain brought an unacceptable offering to the Lord. He had not done well, and his offering had been rejected by God. At first glance it seems that Cain had been treated unfairly by God. How was Cain to know what would constitute an acceptable offering? It is not totally clear in the Scripture, but some say that Cain should have known. In Genesis 3:21 we read that after Adam and Eve had sinned and become aware of their nakedness, God had killed some animals and made them tunics of skin. This is the first time that we see in Scripture the necessity of the shedding of blood for the covering of sin. This happened before Cain was born but he would surely have known about it. Perhaps therefore he should have understood that the shedding of blood was required. Be that as it may, there can be no argument that Cain chose to do things ‘his way’ and not God’s way, whether knowingly or not.

From the passage quoted above it seems to me that Cain’s incorrect sacrifice was not counted as sin at that point, and God gave him an opportunity to correct his mistake. Cain still had the choice whether or not to let sin enter into his life. He could have simply brought to God the correct sacrifice and found full acceptance. However he chose otherwise. He allowed jealousy and anger to rule over him, and this ultimately led to the murder of his innocent brother.

Even after this terrible act, God gave Cain one last chance to repent, when He spoke with him saying, “Where is your brother Abel?”, but Cain refused to take responsibility for what he had done and lied to God (Genesis 4:9-10) thereby increasing the trespass even more. Consequently God cursed him saying, “So now you are cursed from the earth, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand”. The word, ארור, here translated as ‘cursed’ implies that the very nature of something has changed. It also carries a sense of finality. There will be no more chances. Now Cain has so hardened his heart against God he will no longer listen to Him, nor even to his own conscience. Interestingly enough, if we continue reading in Genesis 4 we see that one of Cain’s descendants, Lamech, was also a murderer and even presumed to claim the ‘mark of Cain’ to protect him from vengeance ‘seventy seventy-fold’ (Genesis 4:23-24). If we harden our hearts against God there is a tendency to slide ever deeper into sin and this tendency is very often passed on down the generations.

Incidentally, we are told that Cain went out from the presence of the Lord (Genesis 4:16). This passage does not say that God cast him out from His presence. God had merely told Cain that he would be cursed from the ground, which would no longer yield its strength to him and he would become a fugitive and a vagabond on the earth. Yet Cain exaggerated the situation, and added his own interpretation, saying “I shall be hidden from your Faceand it will happen to me that anyone who finds me will kill me”. His anger and his sense of rejection caused him to perceive his punishment as being worse than God intended, and this just fueled his indignation and intensified his anger. It was this that drove him out from the presence of God. Thus it was Cain who rejected God, not the other way around.

Cain went out from the presence of the LORD and dwelt in the land of Nod to the east of Eden (Genesis 4:16). Where was the land of Nod?  We are told it was east of Eden and some believe it to have been the Arabian Peninsula. The land of Nod may not have been an actual place since this phrase could also be translated as the land of wandering, an allusion to the type of life Cain and his descendants would experience as fugitives and vagabonds.

As we continue to read through the historical books of the Old Testament we see this pattern, repeated again and again. Every individual and every nation faces exactly the same choice, then as it is today. Will we do it God’s way, or rebel and go our own way? Will we choose obedience or rebellion, love or murder? Will we accept God or reject him? Will we cooperate with him towards redemption or will we fight against him?

This is what I have called the Cain Principle and it underlies all of human history, from the time of the Fall until now. We can see it at work on many levels, but especially we can see it as it relates to the chosen line of the Messiah. The Enemy, Satan, works through mankind trying to bring to naught God’s redemption plan. If he, Satan, can arouse our jealousy and anger towards God’s chosen, he can lead us to murder. This is the root of the ancient enmity, towards God’s chosen, both Israel and the saints in Yeshua (Jesus).

Satan, by causing Cain to murder his brother and to go out from the presence of God, tried to break the line of descent that would lead to the Messiah. God however raised up a third brother, Seth (Genesis 4:25), to replace Cain and Abel.  Seth was the beginning of a line of descent through which the promises of God for redemption would be carried until it gave rise to the Messiah, Yeshua (Genesis 5, Luke 3:23-38). At various points of history, Satan tried to break that line in an effort to derail God’s plan. After the Fall in Eden, the next major attack came during the days of Noah....

This is why we are exhorted to pray for the peace of Jerusalem, for in Jerusalem and in God's chosen people, Israel, lies all the hope of the world. The people of Israel are as sinful as any other nation, but they are still the chosen of our God. That has never changed in spite of what the preachers of replacement theology claim.

The Apostle Paul addressed this issue very clearly:
I say then, has God cast away His people? Certainly not! For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin.  God has not cast away His people whom He foreknew....
I say then, have they stumbled that they should fall? Certainly not! But through their fall, to provoke them to jealousy, salvation has come to the Gentiles. For if their being cast away is the reconciling of the world, what will their acceptance be but life from the dead?
For I do not desire, brethren, that you should be ignorant of this mystery, lest you should be wise in your own opinion, that blindness in part has happened to Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in.  And so all Israel will be saved, as it is written:
“The Deliverer will come out of Zion,
And He will turn away ungodliness from Jacob;
For this is My covenant with them,
When I take away their sins.”
For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.
  Romans 11: 1-2, 11-15, 25-27, 29

We need to pray for Israel, that they may be saved, for as Paul says, their acceptance into the by God into the Kingdom will bring forth life from the dead, the final resurrection and the redemption of the world. Herein lies our only hope.
